The locker used by Kobe Bryant for most of his legendary NBA career sold for $2.9 million in New York on Friday, as part of a rare sports memorabilia auction at Sotheby’s. The price of the Staples Center locker, which Bryant used while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, is nearly double the $1.5 million it was estimated to bring. Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star guard, died in a 2020 helicopter crash at the age of 41. He spent his entire NBA career with the Lakers from 1996-2016.
According to Sotheby’s, a maintenance worker saved the locker from being scrapped in 2018 during Staples Center arena renovations. An American collector later acquired the piece.
“Today’s price highlights not only Cobb’s enduring legacy, but also the exceptional nature of this unique item,” said Brahms Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collections at the sale, which was achieved after 19 bids.
The Sotheby’s sale featured memorabilia from sports icons such as Michael Jordan and Reggie Jackson, as well as items from contemporary stars such as Rafael Nadal and Stephen Curry.
