Cricket South Africa (CSA) acted on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to act against violence against women and children by officially launching one of the most anticipated events on the South African cricketing calendar, the Black Day ODI game, in Durban on Monday.
The cause-driven Black Day ODI game is set for Saturday, January 23 at the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium and will pit the Protea Women in their black kits against Pakistan Women in one of South Africa’s premier women’s sporting events.
The Black Day ODI will be the first match for the Proteas and the team aims to act as a catalyst in the fight against gender-based violence in South Africa. With Hilton Moreng’s complaint, CSA has taken the lead in creating an event that calls attention to this injustice that erodes the fabric of our society.
As gender-based violence becomes a national agenda and cross-cutting, CSA will collaborate with social workers and stakeholders who play a role in driving this initiative. These include team sponsor Momentum, women’s rights organization People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), national sports federations (Netball SA and Banyana Banyana) as well as programs working with GBV. This collaboration and collective effort is geared towards further spreading the message that GBV has no place in South Africa.
“The Black Day ODI is an event in our calendar that will allow us as a federation and the Momentum Protea players to be community servants,” CSA acting chief executive Foletsi Moseki said in a statement.
“This is an opportunity for us to raise awareness and encourage our society to be zero-tolerant to all forms of violence against women and girls. Black Day ODI is the perfect platform to galvanise, educate, mobilize, create awareness and agitate for the eradication of GBV,” concluded Moseki.
The inaugural event is set to become a South African institution, celebrating reasons beyond its whimsical and witty invitation to #EndGBV for cricketers and fans alike.
